Make chalkboard paint - DIY.- Home school idea - Craft

DIY Chalkboard Paint.

So easy  & works on most surfaces & even furniture big or small.

chalkboard 2
As I was setting up the classroom for homeschooling my 4 younger children I was given school supplies from others. I was given a perfect size chalkboard but it had been used so much that the paint was not able to be wrote on. So remembering there was a DIY recipe for chalkboard paint that I could use any color flat paint & use baking soda. I went searching for that recipe, & the search led me to "Make your own Chalkboard & Paint" I read it & knew I could alter it to fit my needs, I even came up with a great way to mix it.

My Version of DIY Chalkboard paint.

What you need:
Flat paint (a quart or pint would be plenty big enough)
Baking soda
Container with a lid (such as an empty spice shaker or jar)
Paintbrush (I used a kids medium size pictured)
Small piece of cardboard to test your paint on
The item you will be painting the chalkboard on

You can use any color flat paint you want, you can even use the paint on the discount rack at the paint store that was made & returned as long as it is flat. You can also use your favorite craft paint (acrylic) as long as it is not glossy (you might want to be wary of water-soluble paints though)
baking soda
Directions:
Step 1: add 1/2 cup of paint to your container
Step 2: add 1 tbsp. of baking soda to your paint (I used 2 tbsp. but start low & build on it)
Step 3: add the lid to the container & shake it hard for 30 seconds or so, take off the lid & double-check that the baking soda mixed in.
DIY chalkboard paintStep 4: testing paint to see if it needs more baking soda, lightly dunk bristles of paintbrush in paint & pant a small circle about the size of a 50 cent piece on the cardboard piece, spread it thin so it dries fast.
Step 5: in just a few minutes the test should be dry enough to check it, simply rub your finger across the paint feeling it to see if it feels your desired roughness (kind of like fine grain sand paper) If it is not rough enough for you add 1 to 2 teaspoons of baking soda & repeat step 4 & 5, I personally added another tbsp. but you need to find your preference.
Step 6: paint on the first layer of paint on your chalkboard surface, allow first coat to totally & completely dry, do not paint the next coat until no wet spots at all remain.
Step 7: paint second coat of paint allow to totally dry & paint third coat of paint, if desired repeat for a fourth coat of paint but 3 coats worked great for my project.

chalkboard
Just put the lid back on the container & stored the chalkboard paint right in it.
Now an important note from the page above I linked to with the original recipe: After it has thoroughly dried make sure you SEASON your chalk board- this means that after your paint is absolutely dry you must cover it completely with chalk (using the side of the stick is fine) and then erase it. Your board is now seasoned and ready for use. (article here)

Other ideas for chalkboard paint.

chalkboard 3The container the paint is stored in: we enjoyed also painting a section of the outside of the container we mixed the chalkboard paint in, that way we can tell what is in it & we used chalk to label it for a neat idea.

Personal desk or travel chalkboard: We also made the kids smaller personal chalkboard for them to use at their desks, I let them paint them as the second day of school arts & craft project. We just used thick cardboard cut into a square the size they wanted it.
Note: these only needed 1 to 2 coats of paint.

Painting furniture: I found lots of great examples online of desks, dressers, nightstand, lamp bases, footboard of beds, painting the section on dressers & beds where the mirrors either broke or fell out, really some amazing ideas for kids rooms. Most said they did 4 coats of paint.

Painting doors & walls: I also saw great ideas for painting whole walls, part of a wall, adding frames or border around them & painting doors & cupboard doors & even painting refrigerator doors. Again 3 to 4 coats of paint.

chalkboard 4School desk tops: I know I mentioned desks above but I am mentioning it again because I think doing the school desktops & maybe even our craft table top might be a great future project since the table for sure needs redone.

Fun, Fun, Fun

This was a great project for the kids to help do & for their input on ideas to paint & on colors, now go buy lots of chalk, some paint & a box of baking soda & have fun with the kids. My teenagers even loved this & have future closet door ideas of their own.

Review: Organic Ayurvedic Roast - Herbal Coffee - and Giveaway
To see my original blog post go here

Are you like me & prefer coffee substitutes?

Then check out my review of the Organic Ayurvedic Roast herbal coffee & enter my giveaway & get your own bag.

Ayurvedic Roast!

Make sure to check Ayurvedic Roast online: Website , Twitter & Facebook

As I have shared before that there is only one brand of black coffee Organic or otherwise that I have found so far that I can drink without getting sick that I have found, so mainly I drink natural coffee substitutes.
coffee 1Enter Ayurvedic Roast: I had never tried Organic Ayurvedic Roast herbal coffee before. This coffee substitute was recommended to me by a fan of my Facebook page. So Me being me just had to try it, especially after I researched & read about it. So I contacted the Ayurvedic Roast at www.AyurvedicRoast.com And Andrew  has been very helpful in getting the product to me & the info needed to get this post on.
I picked the unflavored herbal blend, but it also available in Vanilla. What I love about the Ayurvedic Roast herbal coffee is unlike the other coffee substitute brands I have used, the Ayurvedic Roast is brewed, not instant. To me there is just something great about brewed even if it is not real coffee.

Brewing info from the www.AyurvedicRoast.com website:

AyurvedicHow To Brew It:  Steep like tea or brew like coffee. Any way you do it, you'll be getting a tasty and healthy caffeine-free

beverage!
1. Boil It in Pure Water: Add 1 tablespoon for every 1 cup of pure water, and boil about 5-10 minutes. Strain and drink. Straining is optional, as the grounds will be soft and are edible. The longer it boils, the stronger it gets. Serve with milk or cream, or soymilk, rice milk, almond milk, or coconut milk.
2. Coffee Drip Machine : This also works well, and produces a deep flavored cup. Use from 1 teaspoon to 1 tablespoon of Roast per cup (8 ounces) of water.
3. Coffee/Tea Press:  Pour boiling water into a coffee/tea press, and add the Roast. Then let sit for 5-10 minutes, depending on the strength desired.
4. Espresso Machine: Grind the Ayurvedic Roast in a coffee grinder, and then you're ready for the espresso machine!
5. Just Pour Hot Water On It:  Pour hot water into a cup containing 1-3 teaspoons (based on desired strength), and let sit for 3-5 minutes. The grounds will get soft, and can be eaten, as they are the barley, rye, and chicory root. Healthy!

My Review:

When ordering online & mail order shipping is a very important part of the process & Ayurvedic fast & safely, A+ to them

best-coffee-substitute2So I immediately opened the package, read the directions & brewed me a pot of Ayurvedic roast, I drank me a mug & 2 of my teen daughters had them a mug too. I drank the first cup just straight so I can get a feel for the flavors, I love the smoothness of this beverage & the warmth & relaxing effect. Right away I knew I was in love with the Ayurvedic roast & found myself worrying about running out before I can purchase more, yup worry when I have a almost full bag, it is that good.

My teen daughters love the full taste as well & every time they hear me brewing up a pot they right away ask if they will get a cup too. I even gave some to my 8 year old son when he was cold & hyper & it calmed him down, & he loved it & keeps asking for more.

So yes I do recommend you add Ayurvedic roast to your cupboard, either in the regular herbal or the vanilla or both. It would be great served to guests in the afternoon, served on cold mornings, or at anytime of they day. Or if you just want to sit & relax.

So tell all your friends & spread the word about this awesome coffee substitute, & drink a healthy alternative to coffee.

Let drink Organic Ayurvedic Roast herbal coffee:

OG coffee aAs everyone knows I love adding raw coconut oil to my warm beverages for a healthy combo drink, & the Ayurvedic roast went amazingly well with a spoon of raw coconut oil. I also used Natural unrefined sugar, and a pinch of natural unrefined pink Himalayan salt for a tasty cup of yumminess.

I also love making my own homemade creamer & it went very well with the Ayurvedic roast coffee (creamer recipe in a future blog)

My daughter loved it with just a bit of milk & natural sugar.

Outstanding customer service:

I honestly do not remember how I heard about Saffron Rouge, but I am pretty sure I had a few fans talking about the great products, this is usually how I start looking into a company is by word of mouth.
So I contacted Saffron Rouge asking if I could review some of their products., And the Product manager Karen contacted me back in a very timely manner, she was very nice & offered to send me the very first Inner Circle kit from August, because the Inner Circle has been so successful they were out of the current kit. Just that says so much about the company, that so many want into the inner circle program.
Saffronrouge 1Karen had the kit mailed to me, but she went above & beyond & included a kit for each of my 3 teen daughters as well, so 2 of my teen daughters will be helping in this review & my oldest will do her own review on Naturally Teen Approved (her review here). Oh in case you were thinking 3 teen daughters? Yes my Pre-teen daughter about a month back officially became a teen, so we now have 3 natural teenagers in our home & they are all girls. It will be a couple of years before the first boy goes into teen-hood.

Find Saffron Rouge online: Website - Inner Circle - Twitter - Facebook - Blog

My Review:

Oh - How much do I now love Saffron Rouge? More than I can probably say.
Not only was Karen great sending us the package very fast but she included a hand written card/note thanking me for my interest. I love any business that can manage to make you feel like a person rather than a number on their list. So I must give props to Karen for doing her job so well.

What organic body care samples were included in each set?:
After the excitement of the girls opening their kits & seeing what was in them & reading about them, they right away began trying them. I had not opened my kit so that I could get pictures, but I so enjoyed all the happy sounds of the girls.

As you can tell I took pictures & yes I opened my kit, I love how the kit is like being given a gift from a friend, it does not matter that each piece is a sample either.
